Everyone has a Susan they love!!

Karen’s mom’s name is Susan, one of my dearest clients name is Susan ….there is Sister Susan, a nun I know who is the sweetest thing … I could go on and on about Susans. But here is what you need to know about the Magnolia named Susan.

Susan is in a group of Magnolias that were developed for their later blooming time . This is very important as Indiana‘s spring can be tricky with weather. The original Saucer Magnolia blooms early and often can get frozen during bud and bloom making you wait another 365 days till it shows off again. ‘Susan‘ magnolias flower about 2-4 weeks later reducing the risk of damage to flowers from late spring frosts. ‘Susan’ is primarily noted for its compact shrubby habit, slightly fragrant, goblet shaped fuchsia flowers that are 5” wide and bloom mid-April to early May. It is a slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree that typically rises over time to 8-12′ tall with an equal spread making this saucer magnolia a must for smaller yards and less maintenance. Another bonus for ‘Susan’ is that it may flowers sporadically in mid summer. Leaves turn yellow-bronze in fall.
